As a result of sharp reductions in consumer spending, the first six months of 2009 were a transition period characterized by corporate expense reductions and re-alignment of most firms' internal cost structures. As of the third quarter 2009, the European Union and some Asian economies have halted several quarters of contraction and are beginning modest growth.
